1. Get book selection approved by your teacher.

2. Read the book.

3. Write a 4 – 5 sentence summary of the novel. (Remember to include the italicized title and the author’s name.)

4. Within your summary or in a separate sentence at the end, write a sentence explaining what theme, symbol, or emotion impacted you in the novel.

5. Write a meaningful poem based on that theme, symbol, or emotion.

6. Do not mention the novel in your poem. (The reader should not even know what book you read from reading your poem.) Do not mention the characters, setting, or author.

7. Give your poem a title that “works” – not Poem from Twilight.

8. Save your work on a drive so that you can submit it to the school literary magazine if requested to do so.
